The Bachelor - Calling All Cynics

Published by laurabelle at 2:16 am under Commentary Edit This

jason_mesnick.jpgNormally, I’m the last person to be cynical. Odd for an entertainment reviewer, I know, but it’s true. I seem to be growing more cynical by the moment, however, when it comes to all things Bachelor and Bachelorette. It’s just getting more and more unbelievable, losing credibility with every turn.

The newest from the ABC camp regarding this dating show franchise is that Jason Mesnick is not only in love with the woman he chooses on the finale of the upcoming season, but they’re already engaged. Before I comment, let me provide a quick recap. Brad Womack led Deanna Pappas to believe he was going to choose her in the end of The Bachelor, then tugged at his collar and didn’t pick her or anyone else. Deanna pled devastation for the way she was treated. She then became the next Bachelorette and Jason Mesnick got down on bended knee and proposed, and she turned him down in favor of Jesse Csincsak. They declared their love for each other and quickly became engaged. Last month ABC announced they were honoring fans’ wishes to make Jason the next Bachelorette, and a few days later Deanna broke it off with Jesse.

So now, just a few weeks away from Jason’s season of the The Bachelor premiering, Jason is telling us he’s not only in love with the woman he chose in the finale, they’re already engaged. This means he proposed to two women in the past year. Let me first remind you that he was my personal pick for Deanna last year. However, I did always pick up an air of desperation about him, and this news just enforces that even more. Is it even possible to fall that deeply in love with two different people in the same year? Does he just propose to every woman he dates?

And here’s the thing that really gets to me about this. There’s a little boy caught in all this. Jason has a young son, Ty, that was introduced to Deanna, and I had misgivings about that back then. This little boy was introduced to her, then she disappeared and turned Jason down. I didn’t think that was fair to expose him to. I can only expect that Jason has introduced Ty to more than one of the finalists of this season of Bachelor, confusing him a little more. And now he’s engaged already to this winner of the show, and we know these relationships have only led to one couple actually walking down the aisle, Trista and Ryan. Jason took those odds and rushed it into engagement chancing another person to come and go from this little boy’s life?

Despite all this, I really hope it works out for Jason. I hope that cynic in me is laid to rest once and for all. Yet the odds are staring me in the face, especially after all that has transpired in just this past year. To release this information now, I think, was a mistake, as it makes us watch this entire season with one eye open and the other one squinting at the TV.
