Barbara Walters’ 10 Most Fascinating People

Published by laurabelle at 4:31 pm under Programming Edit This

0000053553_20081202121209.jpgBarbara Walters has made her choices for the Ten Most Fascinating People of 2008, and even she admitted in this AP article that it was her easiest year yet choosing. I wish I would have played a little game with myself and tried to figure it out before I looked, but once I looked, I had to agree these were exactly that, the most fascinating.

Yet to be revealed is the order in which they’re placed and the number one pick, yet the remaining nine have been named. From the film world, Walter is choosing Will Smith, Tom Cruise, and Frank Langella. Smith and Cruise are obvious choices, but Langella? For being fascinating, I haven’t heard anyone talking about him. Walters claims there’s a buzz about him thanks to his new film Frost/Nixon. Oh, is that out? No, it’s not. It’s released in limited theaters this coming Friday, with more the following week, and even more on Christmas Day. I think Walters is jumping the gun a little.

From the TV world we have two more obvious choices in Miley Cyrus and Tina Fey. Cyrus is the in thing with the tween set, and has been for awhile. But this year her name was even more in the forefront after some questionably racy pictures of her that appeared in Vanity Fair. As for Tina Fey, I’m almost questioning why she’s not number one. I think she was the lady of the hour this fall with her dead-on impersonations of Sarah Palin, who by the way is also on the list.

Olympian Michael Phelps arguably could have captured the number one spot as well, as he was what we were all talking about late spring and early fall. His mother almost could have had a spot somewhere in the top ten as well. Michael, and not his mother, is in the top ten, but not in the number one spot.

The two remaining most fascinating people are Thomas Beatie and Rush Limbaugh. Beatie, as the first pregnant man, I definitely get. Even though we all understand how it happened physically, it’s still hard to fathom. He is certainly nothing less than fascinating. Rush Limbaugh, I do not understand. I don’t see anything fascinating about him in this past year. A few years back, sure, but not more recently.

The AP article suggested the missing #1 is Barack Obama, and looking at this impressive list, I’d have to agree the president-elect is the obvious choice. He’ll be the first African-American president of the United States. How much more fascinating can you get? I’ve been racking my brain, and I just can’t think of anyone this year less fascinating.

Barbara Walters will air this special on ABC on Thursday night at 9:00 PM CT. Until then, can anyone out there think of a better choice for #1?
