The Amazing Race - Phil Keoghan Shows Why He’s the Best Host
Recently on a forum I was asked who I thought the top three reality TV hosts were, and with no hesitation, I named Phil Keoghan of The Amazing Race, Cat Deeley of So You Think You Can Dance, and Tom Bergeron for Dancing With the Stars. I have different reasons for each, as Cat is just always so warm, and Tom has to have the best dry wit. Phil just seems to combine all of it together, and is good-looking to boot. While guesting on The Bonnie Hunt Show yesterday, he showed even more.
Phil started Bonnie’s show off by telling her and executive producer Don Lake as they showed up for work that they were the last to arrive and were being eliminated. He went on a chastising rampage against them, but she couldn’t keep a straight face, telling Phil he sounded like Christopher Walken the way he was talking. He tried to keep improvising, but once she came in and hugged him, he had no chance but to give up the routine, and let his real warm personality show through.
Outside the taped bit, when Phil came on as the actual guest, he wasn’t just extremely warm and engaging as he always is, but was really funny as well. He did the bit shown above with the cup of water and flirted with Bonnie mercilessly about how great her Chap Stick tasted when they were making out earlier. Not that she seemed to mind much, and once he talked about once hosting a show from a nudist colony totally in the nude, she had to fan herself. I have to say I wasn’t there in person, and I was a little flushed as well. Not only could Phil ring the bell with the really heavy mallet to raise some money for breast cancer research, he rang it a second time … one-handed.
Phil also gave use a small preview of something to expect on this week’s episode of The Amazing Race. They travel to his homeland, New Zealand. He thought it would be fun to say that teams now had to travel to Phil’s parents house for scones and tea, but they couldn’t make the stop work out right on their route. Instead, his dad will be the greeter. He stood on the mat with Phil and couldn’t believe that was all he did for his job.
I’m not sure why I’ve never caught Phil on any other talk show, but from the bit he does with the water, saying he always wanted to do it, it certainly seems like it’s one of the first, if not the first, he’s been on. He must have a very niche audience, as in comparison, we see Ryan Seacrest and Jeff Probst all over the place. I like Ryan and Jeff as well, but they just don’t seem to have everything Phil has, which is interesting, since Phil orginally auditioned to be the host of Survivor. I can’t imagine that taking place now, as he just seems perfect right where he is.
