Dancing With the Stars - deSpirito Gets Spirited, But Probably Going Home
Before the show even starts, I think it has to be Rocco diSpirito going home this week. He’s one of the lesser talented celebrities there and doesn’t seem to have the popularity to pull in the votes. We know he would have gone home last week, so he’ll really have to do well tonight to get everyone to vote for him and save him. I just don’t see it happening.
Maurice Green and Cheryl Burke are taking on the the samba, and a very enthusiastic crowd. Hearing the samba is a party dance, Maurice says partying has never been this hard. He’s not having a lot of fun with it, so Cheryl invites his daughter in to lighten it up a little for me. He joins in with her and her friends in a rousing game of Ring Around the Rosie. They dance to That’s the Way I Like It, and have the complete disco look going on with hair and outfits. His arms are still too stiff, but he does some really good spins on his knees.
Len Goodman recognizes that Maurice found the fun in the dance, but he’d like him to refine the dancing with his techniques. Bruno Tonioli refers to Cheryl and Maurice as Mr. and Mrs. Jackie Brown, looking oh so fabulous, but their samba is not looking fabulous. It’s getting too far in the competition to not have the refinement. Carrie Ann Inaba tells them last week she thought they were contenders, but this week, they fell too much back into free form, as they don’t seem to be growing as much. Maurice stays in character backstage, saying he just wanted to groove for everybody. The judges don’t fit in his groove too much, as they gets scores of 6, 7, and 7.
Cody Linley and Julianne Hough are doing the tango this week, and she knows he’ll need all of his focus to pull that off. He calls it hard to do that and not get distracted, doing this all day long. She talks to his high school principal, to see if she can figure out how to get him back on track. With the heavy Texan accent she has, I’m wondering where Cody’s is. They dance their tango to Bohemian Like You, and this guy definitely seems focused tonight. He also seems to be keeping the frame well, although there seems to be a misstep in there.
Bruno tells Cody it looks like he’s starting to find his mojo. He was confident, dramatic, and masculine, but he still seems weak in the knees a little. Carrie Ann agrees, and says he was doing his holds so hard, she was getting a little afraid. She points out, too, they weren’t stumbling, but he tripped over Julianne’s dress. Len tells the “little boy” he turned into the boy wonder. Without a doubt for him, it’s their best dance so far. They get scores of 7, 8, and 8, and they are quite thrilled with the 8s.
Alec Mazo is pinning Toni Braxton’s outfit, and I can’t be sure whether it’s a bit or not. They’ll be doing the samba, and Toni feels good about it, saying the doctor has told her her heart is quite healthy. She wants to get out there and do it. He wants to add samba rolls into the dance, as it’s one of the more difficult moves in dance. Toni doesn’t seem tonight as they do their samba that she is always in time with Alec. They do their samba rolls well and all, but something just seems off to me about it, and I think it’s the timing.
Carrie Ann tells them there is no denying the sensuality they have on the dance floor, but what they need to work on is her shoulders. She needs to get taller and bigger. Len knows it’s hard to get the balance right between choreography and perfromance, and he ejoyed the samba rolls, but on the promenade, she went long, and it put her into a state of flux. Bruno calls Toni a tasty morsel of sugar and spice. He espeically points out her booty, mentioning that she can shake it like the best. Their scores don’t necessarily reflect the judges’ raving, as they get 7, 7, and 8. Samantha also tells us here that next week there are going to be four brand new dances, never done before here, introduced to the show. Hmm.
We never know what we’ll get with Cloris Leachman and Corky Ballas, and last week she finished without her hair. She knows she is in total jeopardy with the votes and scores being carried over from last week. She wants this week to concentrate on technique, no matter how badly she fails. Corky recognized her hard work and brought her family in to see her, including her great grandson. Imagine a great grandmother doing all this! Right fromthe start, she gets her acting ability going and is pulling this off, albeit a little stiff. Serious Cloris is still fun to watch this week! She gets a standing O!
Len tells Cloris and Corky if he hadn’t seen it, he wouldn’t have believed it. From the first moment of her sitting on the stairs he absolutely loved it. Bruno tells Cloris the grandma from hell has become the grand duchess in lust. He also calls out her great legs, and as she lifts them up, Tom tells her she’s like a sun dial. Carrie Ann owes Cloris an apology, and hearing that, she comes up to talk to her one on one, but Carrie Ann complains she’s blocking the camera. She tells Cloris she underestimated she her, thinking she always had to go for the quick joke. Cloris replies they did, and asks if she missed it. They get scores of 8, 7, and 7, their highest so far.
Rocco deSpirito and Karina Smirnoff have their work ahead of them to increase their scores like Cloris did. He’s determined to work extra hard this week on the samba. Karina thinks he’s so focused on the steps, he’s forgetting to have fun. Hos mom, who we’ve met on his other reality shows visits, tells him to shake what his mother gave him. Although she is watching him practice, he could have taken that too much to heart. Tonight they dance to I Go to Rio, and he is definitely having fun … and shaking what his mother gave him. I’ve never seen deSpritio so … spirited. I don’t think I’m ready to see him this flighty and fancy-free.
Rocco says he’s been waiting all his life to wear pink ruffles, but Bruno breezes past this telling Rocco he likes him very much, but all the ruffles in the world can’t disguise the fact he he doesn’t have a musical bone in his body. He thinks his accountant would do a better samba. Carrie Ann calls it hard to critique him as he’s so fun to watch, but the dancing is still lacking. Len tells him he was very good, as he did what his mom told him. He came out and he had fun. They get a score of three 6s, and need to hope for the viewers to save them. Eh, not looking good for him.
Overcoming the injury from last week, are Susan Lucci and Tony Dovolani. Susan is quite put off by Carrie Ann calling her timid, saying that has never happened to her before. They want to now bring the drama of Erica Kane into her tango to fix this, and she gets him a part on All My Children as a guy on crutches. A fan of this show for a long time, if anyone can be seducdtive, it’s Erica Kane. One look at her face before she starts tells us, she means business. It’s not as fun as Cloris’, but I think it’s well-done. And there’s a moment at the end, where I would swear I was watching her dance in Pine Valley.
Carrie Ann, tells Susan she gave it to her, and that’s what she has been waiting for, Miss Erica Kane. When they call dance moving art, that’s what it means for her. Len tells her there was nothing timid about that, as it had drama and passiion and it was her best dance so far. Bruno always knew beneath that polished appearance, there was a tough broad, and she showed it tonight. Can I just add as Susan, not Eria, she is the most gracious person? She athinks Erica needs to dance on the show now. They get three 8s, their best score yet, and she’s very happy … and very gracious.
Brooke Burke and Derek Hough had their tussle last week, but they still pulled off a 10. To get into the mood for the samaba, they went out this week and partied, Braziian style. She gets on stage and shakes it with the showgirls. He’s being “freaky and goofy” with her this week, and she is seeing a whole new side of him. Brooks is ready, telling us “This mama is ready to samba.” They play it tonight like a nerdy student and samba girl, but she forces him to let loose at a certain point ditching his glasses and tie, and ripping open his shirt. I smell some more 10s coming their way.
Len tells Brooke she sets such a high standard for herself, but for him it was too erotic. Bruno tells Len he’s either getting too much or not enough, as that would please anybody. Len didn’t enoy the stage antics, but did enjoy some of the moves. Bruno exclaims that a sex bomb has hit the building. It was the sexiest samba he’s ever seen, and he now needs a smoke. Carrie Ann tells Brooke what makes her so great is her blend of athleticism, her grace, and sexuality. It makes her a perfect candidate to maybe go all the way. Derek still can’t stop shaking it backstage. The scores are 9, 8, and 9. Wow, I thought for sure they’d get at least two 10s.
Lance Bass and Lacey Schwimmer are up next, trying once again to find the right mix that they haven’t reached yet. Having the tango, it’s going to be tough for them, especially since his frame is never good. He adds in a neck crack that he remembers from an ‘N Sync video. I think they’d make Wade Robson from So You Think You Can Dance quite happy with this choreography. It’s just “that much” out there. They dance to Disturbia, and I keep watching his frame, knowing that’s Lance’s weak spot. They do some great spins, and he seems completely in character. Len has to like this one.
Bruno calls this quirky with a gothic twist, yet always a tango, plus they managed to control it. He thinks Lance should always be this much assured. Carrie Ann finds that Lance was disappearing from the competition, because he hadn’t shone (that’s the word she was looking for and couldn’t find) until now, as this was amazing. Bruno compares Carrie Ann and her word blunder to Paula Abdul, and she is quite insulted. Len refers to Lance as Sir Dance-a-Lot. Lance wants to coin the phrase, as he loves it. Their scores are their best ever, with 9, 8, and 9, tying them with Brooke and Derek.
Last up, but never least are Warren Sapp and Kym Johnson. A samba with someone that big is really going to be interesting. Kym wants him to be “him” which he calls “old fat boy.” To work on his rhythm, they watch a Brazilian art form that combines dance and martial arts. Warren even pulls off a handstand. Dancing tonight to Bounce With Me, the problem here seems to be that the choreography is meant for someone much tinier and lighter than Warren. He’s got the samba groove, but the moves are just not meant for him.
Carrie Ann tells Warren he cracks her up and makes her laugh, as the dancing got the good score last week, not his wink. This week, though, it was lacking content. Len tells Warren he always makes him smile as he’s a joy to watch, but Carrie Ann is right that there were too many gyrating type moves. Bruno admits Wareen’s a crowd pleaser, but tells Warren he took it too easy tonight. He can dance and has the ability to blow them away, but didn’t do itthis time. They still do well enough with the scores, getting 8, 7, and 7. Cloris comes into the picture to challenge him a little, and I’m really not quite sure what goes on there.
There is absolutely not a shred of doubt in my mind. Rocco is going home. He had great fun on the dance floor, and that makes it an even better way to go out. He had the lowest score tonight, and the lowest combined score last week. Looking at just judges’ scores, he and Cloris were the bottom two, but I think Cloris has fans that keep saving her. Rocco would need a lot of votes tonight to save him, and I just don’t think it’ll happen. Correction. I know it’s not going to happen.
