R.I.P. Eileen Herlie
I can’t even tell you how much this deeply saddens me. Our Myrtle Fargate has died. To anyone that wasn’t a regular viewer of All My Children, she was actress Eileen Herlie, but to us viewers, she will always be Mrs. Fargate, ex-carny.
No one ever pulled anything over on her. She worked on the carnival circuit for years, and she was even the first to know that Phoebe Tyler was being taken to the cleaners by Professor Largely Wallingford. Myrtle, the old bird, recognized him from the carnival circuit. Some people, namely Phoebe, never learned to trust her, but the character of Myrtle became much beloved throughout all of Pine Valley. You always knew where to get the truth. Myrtle would always tell you how it was.
Herlie was nominated for Daytime Emmys three times for the role of Myrtle, but she was a successful actress long before that. In an acting career of more than sixty years, she was a Broadway actress and film star, even appearing with Richard Burton, yet she also once appeared with Sir Laurence Olivier in the film Hamlet.
Dying from complications of pneumonia, Herlie won’t soon be forgotten, and for that matter, Myrtle Fargate, or “that Fargate woman” as Phoebe called her, won’t either. Truth be told, although I watched All My Children from its second season on, I did stop watching just a few years ago. This news has certainly made me reminisce about the show that was so much a part of my life. You can bet I’ll be turning it on to see how Pine Valley memorializes her.
