What’s Hot On TV Tonight - Starting the Day Off With a Few Good Scares

Published by laurabelle under Programming Edit This

0000050990_20080815172043.jpgI’ve been waiting for some good Halloween spooky movies all month, and I just wasn’t getting what I wanted. It just figures they wait until the last possible moment. I wanted some classics, and I found a few. Missing still is the original Halloween. I can’t even remember the last time I saw it. The polyester pants on Jamie Lee Curtis are truly frightening!

1. The Omen. It’s the original  one, and the one that makes me nervous to go near any kid named Damien. This is definitely a classic. 8:00 AM CT Spike

2. The Exorcist. From one scary kid to the next. I wonder if this one would even seem as scary still, as much as we’ve made jokes about Linda Blair and the pea soup she’s splaying out as her head spins around. 12:30 PM CT Bravo

3. The Ellen deGeneres Show. Ellen always has something special in store for her Halloween episodes. Today her guest will be Wanda Sykes, which only seems to open up the comedy that much more. Syndicated, check local listings.

4. Poltergeist. By now you all know how much I love a good movie quote. And I just have to. “Carol Ann! Come into the light!” 6:30 PM CT ABC Family Continue Reading »

Survivor - Two for the Price of One

Published by laurabelle under Commentary Edit This

ken.jpgI have to hand it to Kenny. Reading up on the cast before this season of Survivor started, I didn’t give him a chance for lasting in the game. Never did I think he might even make it to the merge. He seemed too innocent, and I didn’t give enough credit to his gaming experience, being that it’s with video games and not outwitting, outplaying, and outlasting. I also thought Randy was going to be out quick with that attitude he had of not getting along with anyone except his recently deceased dog. Yet, here he is, surviving not just one but two tribes, and getting in well with the members of each.

I thought for sure after Kenny was convincing Michelle on day one to eat termites that he just didn’t know this game and was going to be an easy out. But what I was missing was that what that snippet did was show how well Kenny can convince people. He convinced her to eat termites on day one, he convinced Sugar to get her immunity idol back from Ace last week, and this week after planting the seeds the previous week was able to follow it up and make Sugar so unsure that Ace had her back to the point she wouldn’t give him the idol again and felt she had to backstab him before he did it to her.

Kenny knew Matt had already stabbed him and Cheryl in the back and that he was willing to vote with Ace to get rid of Cheryl. Kenny needed to hold onto Cheryl, or else he would be the next to go. He knew he couldn’t tell Matt, and hence didn’t tell him anything. Now with Sugar aligning with Kenny and Cheryl, Matt ought to be really, really worried. If you’re the guy left out of the loop, it’s never a good sign. Continue Reading »

What’s Hot On TV Tonight - In Need of Some Rehab?

Published by laurabelle under Programming Edit This

gary-busey-wi-oscars2008.jpgI missed the first episode of the second season of Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew. If you did too, don’t despair, as VH1 has somehow figured out and is re-airing it tonight, along with the second episode. I loved watching them progress through the season last time, especially once they finally dropped all those pretenses and really got down to why they were the way they were.

1. Oprah Winfrey. Oprah, who is well-known for her own weight struggles, has on today as guests the past winners of the the show The Biggest Loser. It’s worth flipping on just to see if they’ve all kept it off. Syndicated, check local listings.

2. Michael. This is absolutely one of my favorite movies of all time, and for a couple of reasons. The first being that it embodies all of my philosophies of life, and the second being that John Travolta’s character reminds me so much of another Michael, my son.  10:30 AM CT Cinemax West

3. The Ellen deGeneres Show. Put away those thermometers. The reason your daughter stayed home from school today is because Zac Efron is on Ellen today. Syndicated, check local listings.

4. Survivor: Gabon - Earth’s Last Eden. With both teams going to tribal council tonight and voting out one from each team, they fight for individual immunity tonight. They also get letters from home tonight, and that’s always good for a good cry. The previews made it seem like Kenny or Cheryl were being voted out tonight, but we know Mark Burnett never tips his hand that much. 7:00 PM CT CBS Continue Reading »

What’s Hot On TV Tonight - Obama’s Message

Published by laurabelle under Programming Edit This

obamabarack.jpgSen. Barack Obama is appearing on several TV stations tonight in a half hour special political message. Does that mean Sen. John McCain will be right behind him, airing his own message on a different night? Maybe the candidates always do this and I just never noticed before. There seems to be many people paying more attention to this election than they normally would.

1. I Am Legend. This is supposed to be a fantastic movie. I have never seen it, as I was afraid to because of the possible animal cruelty involved in the movie. I have been assured by some that have seen it, that you never really see anything happen, and it’s just implied. Watch at your own risk and now be better informed. 11:45 AM CT AMax E

2. The Ellen deGeneres Show. It’s all young girls on today, or should I say young women. Ashley Tisdale is on promoting High School Musical 3, and Jennifer Love Hewitt and Kellie Pickler are on as well. Syndicated, check local listings.

3. Barack Obama Political Message. Did he buy this block of time or does every candidate get this? The interesting thing is it’s not on every channel that would normally cover the debates. ABC has been conspicuously skipped. Does he have something against ABC or can they just not bare to not air Pushing Daisies? Scheduled to appear on NBC, CBS, Fox, and some cable networks as well, starting at  7:00 PM CT

4. America’s Next Top Model. The aspiring models travel to London and go on a scavenger hunt, then end up modeling clothes in a storefront window. 7:00 PM CT CW Continue Reading »

Politics and Reality TV

Published by laurabelle under Commentary Edit This

joseph-biden-460b_795538c.jpgI’m still on vacation here in the Big Easy, but I have a great sub writing for me today. My buddy, Carrie Grosvenor from Reality Shack , is filling in here to talk a little about politics and reality TV. The interesting thing is she seems to have a good grasp here on our presidential candidates, and she’s from Canada!

Ever wondered how the current presidential and vice presidential candidates would do on some of our favorite reality TV shows? No, it’s just me? That’s fine, I’m more than happy to share my mental scorecard with you!

Just for fun, let’s take a look at how the big four (Biden, McCain, Obama, and Palin – in alphabetical order so as not to show any bias) would fare on a few reality competition shows.

Survivor

Survivor is the grand-daddy of reality TV, combining a competitive environment with survival skills and creating a very social game.

Joe Biden – Biden has the shmooze thing down pat, and would likely get himself into an early alliance. He could definitely charm himself into the final four given the chance, but it’s tough to predict how he’d do in the challenges. He seems to be in good shape, but we all know that age plays a part in almost all of the competitions. His major downfall, however, would be off-the-cuff remarks during Tribal Council that could come back to bite him in the butt. Continue Reading »

What’s Hot On TV Tonight - It’s the Great Pumpkin!

Published by laurabelle under Programming Edit This

b00004w5uk01lzzzzzzz.jpgThere are only a few reruns on tonight, but the big news is that it’s the yearly showing of It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. I remember watching this when I was really young, but it’s interesting that I never even considered the existence of The Great Pumpkin a possibility. For more Halloween-related TV, NCIS chimes in with an episode taking place supposedly on Halloween week.

1. The Holiday. Although I’m not in the holiday mood, it’s starting to get chilly around here, and the warmth of the California home and the fireplace in the London home just seem really good and comforting right now. And believe it or not, Jack Black is quite warm in this as well. 9:35 AM Starz 1 West

2. Rachel Ray. Hot Gossip here. Selena Gomez will be the guest, and she’s supposedly going to speak about her rumored feud with Miley Cyrus. My guess is we’ll just hear there’s nothing to it. Syndicated, check local listings.

3. NCIS. A Halloween-related episode, a killer leaves clues on the internet about the identity of his next victim during the week of Halloween. 7:00 PM CT CBS

4. The Biggest Loser: Families. It’s the calorie quiz episode, and this time the winning team will have some type of advantage at the weigh-in. Someone apparently gets the whole calorie idea, as they end up setting a weight loss record on the show, losing more individually than the whole other team. 7:00 PM CT NBC Continue Reading »

What’s Hot On TV Tonight - Reruns Already?

Published by laurabelle under Programming Edit This

02.jpgWe must be gearing up for November Sweeps or something, as we have a fair amount of repeats on tonight. Here’s what I was able to scrap together that isn’t a repeat.

1. Pretty In Pink. I guess I just have a thing for socially awkward kids. Molly Ringwald stars, but I love Jon Cryer in this. Yet another great John Hughes film from the 80s. 8:30 AM CT HBO Signature

2. Almost Famous. After you get your fill of the 80s in the above, you can rock it out in the 70s with this movie which is based on a young writer doing an article for Rolling Stone and following Led Zeppelin around. 2:20 PM HBO Zone

3. The Ellen deGeneres Show. Hilary Swank guests, as well as Warren Sapp and Kym Johnson from Dancing With the Stars, and the other funny lady on daytime TV (No, Tyra it is not you), Bonnie Hunt, appears as well. Syndicated, check local listings.

4. Chuck. When Chuck has to take on terrorists targeting a Buy More staffer, Jeff, the spy thing begins to have a harmful effect on him. It then appears Jeff could be an integral part of preventing WWIII. 7:00 PM CT NBC Continue Reading »

True Blood Brings On The Vamp

Published by laurabelle under Reviews Edit This

Laurabelle is enjoying a little bit of a well deserved break from the daily grind, and she has asked me to come in and talk to everyone here a bit. We all know Laurabelle covers the latest news for you when it comes to reality television, but there are a number of exciting dramas out there. My name is Gina, and you might recognize me from my blog Celebrity Today. I cover a number of dramas over there with weekly recaps, and one of my favorite series this year is HBO’s True Blood. It airs Sunday nights on the cable network, and it is a series quickly growing in popularly. HBO gave the go ahead for a season two after only the second episode of the series aired. That is one vote of confidence to the series.

trueblood19.jpg

True Blood is based on a series of books that tell the life of Sookie Stackhouse. She lives in the town of Bon Temps, a small Louisiana town, and Bill moves back to the town after quite some time. Sookie and Bill are both different though. Sookie is a telepathic waitress, and Bill is a vampire. In the setting of True Blood, vampires are real and they have just come out of the coffin so to speak. They live and walk among the humans, and they have rights just like everyone else. Sookie and Bill get closer as time goes on, and they are now moving towards being a couple. They had sex for the first time a couple of episodes back. Sookie is drawn to the vampire because she cannot read him like she can others.

The little town of Bon Temps is exciting for a small town. There is a crazy cast of characters that make up the series. Everything from a gay cook, a strange bar owner that seems to have his own secret, Sookie’s sex crazed brother and a few others. The group mixed together makes for interesting television. I hadn’t originally planned to watch or review the series, but I watched the first episode and it pulled me in. The main characters aren’t the only ones that grabbed me either. Every character in this one has some importance. They are all closely connected. Continue Reading »

What’s Hot On TV Tonight - Good Football Viewing

Published by laurabelle under News Edit This

strahanfoxnflsunday_2.jpgThere are some great NFL football games on today. Some pretty well-matched teams that are in the top of their divisions. And after that is the World Series. There’s no Sunday Night Football game on tonight, and I can only imagine it’s so as not to conflict with baseball, which is kind of nice of them when you think about it, but I’m sure it has more to do with contracts than being nice.

1. Meet the Press. Sen. John McCain is on discussing his candidacy for the presidential election. Hopefully you got some sleep last night, otherwise it’s going to blend right in with Saturday Night Live. 10:00 AM CT NBC

2. Revenge of the Nerds. If you’re totally not into football, this is the movie for you. Even iffy are into football, it’s still a really funny flick. 11:30 AM CT AMax E

3. NFL Football. Cardinals at Panthers. Both of these teams are leading their divisions, with Arizona 4-2 and Carolina at 5-2, however, Arizona is in a much weaker division The lowest performing team in Carolina’s division is the Saints at 3-4. Carolina’s offense will be the one to watch. 12:00 PM CT Fox

4. NASCAR Racing: Sprint Cup in Hampton, GA. At the Pep Boys Auto 500, Jimmie Johnson is still leading the pack, 152 points ahead of the nearest competition. 1:00 PM CT ABC Continue Reading »

Jennifer Hudson’s Family Tragedy

Published by laurabelle under Commentary, News Edit This

539w.jpgAs reported on Celebrity Today , Jennifer Hudson has just suffered a huge loss and must be asking herself what could happen to turn her life around like this. Just a few years back she was singing on cruise ships, then became a finalist on American Idol, drawing praise from the likes of Elton John. She then campaigned hard for the coveted role of Effie in the film version of Dreamgirls and got it, over season three American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino. She won an Oscar for the role, appeared in the film version of Sex and the City, and released an album … finally. She recently announced her engagement, and last week premiered her third movie, The Secret Life of Bees.

The news broke yesterday afternoon towards the end of the workday in Chicago that Jennifer’s mother and brother had been found murdered in the city. Worse yet, a little boy in the home, 7 years old, had disappeared. They seemed pretty intent on wanting to find this little boy as Amber Alerts went out all over the Chicagoland area. And in the midst of a really terrible thunderstorm, the alerts on the TV weren’t weather-related. They were all mentioning the Amber Alert, with the city intent on finding this little boy.

How do you go from that to that? How do you go from everything working and clicking to absolutely everything going so terribly wrong?  Not only is she losing her mother, but her brother as well, and in such a terrible way! Two things came to my mind with this, the murders and abduction are either a child custody case or being done because of Jennifer’s fame. Either is terrible. Police have now announced that they have taken Jennifer’s brother-in-law (her older sister’s husband and the step-father to the boy) into custody, yet he hasn’t been charged with anything yet. They caught up with him fairly quickly, but he didn’t have the little boy with him, which means it’s not looking very good that the little boy is alive. Continue Reading »
