Cloris Leachman Previews a Little of Dancing With the Stars On Bonnie Hunt

0000012401_20060921032026.jpgI had another blog post halfway done, but I’m ditching it … for now. While working on that blog post, I watched one of the most entertaining hours of television I’ve watched in awhile, and I thought what better to talk about on What’s Hot On TV than something that had me laughing my butt off in the middle of the day?

I’ve been mentioning The Bonnie Hunt Show on my What’s Hot On TV Tonight lists. To me, she’s the best thing to happen to daytime TV since Ellen deGeneres. I always liked Bonnie whether she was appearing in a movie or on her own primetime comedy series, and Bonnie herself hosting a talk show is just that much better. It allows her comedy to come out, the real Bonnie, just as it did with Ellen.

Cloris Leachman was originally scheduled to be a guest on the show last Tuesday, but her appearance was delayed until today. With it finally airing today, it was well worth the wait. Although she has starred in movies and TV throughout a nearly sixty year career, I know her most as annoying neighbor Phillis from The Mary Tyler Moore Show. She’s in two upcoming productions, the film The Women and Dancing With the Stars on ABC.

For nearly two entire segments, Cloris wasn’t discussing either of her upcoming stints, and in fact never did discuss The Women. She repeatedly talked about her enjoyment of her Warner bra, and Bonnie brought up that Cloris had been walking around backstage without pants on, leading her to realize Cloris doesn’t wear panties. I’m guessing that was quite a show, no matter what her age. A guest that was on the show later, Jesse Brune from Workout on Bravo, told of Cloris coming into his dressing room, introducing herself, and doing his makeup. It sounds like she still didn’t have pants on, and he had to explain to her that he was gay.

01.jpgCloris asked where Bonnie came from, apparently not a fan, and Bonnie mentioned meeting her when Cloris was appearing in a theatre production and Bonnie was appearing as a night club singer across the street. She asked Bonnie to sing a few bars, and she sang some of Summertime, beautifully I’ll add, and Cloris jumped in and joined her. I think it would be nice if Bonnie did some more singing on the show.

Once that segment ended, and we came back from commercial, Bonnie’s hair and makeup crew were attending to her, as Cloris jumped in and joined them, insisting on brushing Bonnie’s hair back away form her face. Bonnie wanted her bangs in her face to hide her wrinkles, explaining that she couldn’t afford Botox, so got bangs instead. Cloris continued kneeling on the chair to lean over Bonnie and brush her hair in that grandmotherly way.

Bonnie and Cloris (I wanted to call her Clyde just now) finally got down to discussing Dancing With the Stars just before the next break. Cloris will be dancing with the father of the professional dancer, Mark Ballas. He won last season along with Kristi Yamaguchi. He’s back, and is bringing with him his father, Corky. Corky made an appearance on Bonnie as well, and discussed that not only did he teach his son everything he knows about dancing, he also taught Julianne and Derek Hough, who lived in his house for some time.

Cloris and Corky were very cute together, and I can only imagine they’ll be just as so during Dancing With the Stars. It was clear that she adored him. Instead of sitting in the two overstuffed chairs, she plopped the two of them together into one chair, with her arms completely around him. They stepped out on the floor and showed a little of the dancing skills they’d been working on, and it was quite clear they have a good rapport.

I’m sure Cloris and Corky won’t win Dancing With the Stars, but I hope they stick around for quite a long time like the older male celebrities when they’re on Dancing With the Stars. I keep thinking of how much of a cut-up George Hamilton could be, yet how suave he could be when he wanted to as well. Or even Jerry Springer. He always had the funny dances to do with Kym Johnson, making light of his lack of abilities, but it made us love him all the more. And by the time he learned the dance that he wanted to do at his daughter’s wedding, we saw a whole new side of him. Judging by what I saw today, I think Cloris could fill that type of role and then some on Dancing With the Stars.
