America’s Got Talent - No Surprises, But a Few Tough Decisions

Published by laurabelle at 11:31 pm under Reviews Edit This

gon_313_05.jpgI wasn’t going to recap tonight’s America’s Got Talent results show, but the decisions facing the judges tonight were such tough ones, that I just felt compelled to recap it anyway. They were really, really tough decisions. Most of the other decisions that the audience had already made were either really obvious, were an a trick, or really didn’t matter too much either way.

Unlike American Idol, there was no forty-five minutes of filler surrounding the results. Just half an hour of elimination and decisions. The first two acts brought to the stage are The Wright Kids and the Zooperstars. I wasn’t sure if The Wright Kids would move on, but facing the blow-up animals costumes, I know it was to be the animals leaving. They must be figuring the same thing, as they’re out of costume for the first time, yet the duck is oddly still hanging around. Surprisingly enough, they’re all really nice-looking guys, making we wonder why they hide in these costumes. They won’t get any face time one way or another, as they’re eliminated.

nup_132107_1059.JPGNext, Jerry Springer brings Neal E. Boyd and Queen Emily to the front of the stage, and the looks on the judges’ faces say the same thing that I’m thinking. Sharon Osbourne and David Hasselhoff are absolutely dumbfounded that only one of these two terrific singers will be moving on. Jerry breaks the ice and tells us neither of them are leaving. They’re both making it through. Whew! They must feel like they dodged a bullet on that one.

The James Gang and Extreme Dance FX take the stage next, and I’m thinking this one could go either way, but it’ll probably be Extreme Dance FX staying. One girl is crying, and another one appears to be yawning, oddly enough. Assumably to balance out both Neal and Emily staying, both of these acts are leaving. No one seems really that shocked. The Cadence and Paul Stalos take the stage, and this is another one that could go either way. Ol’ Blue Eyes comes through again. Stalos moves on, and the drummers go home.

Daniel Jens and Jessica Rice came in fifth and sixth place, meaning the judges will decide which of them moves on. Just for a change of pace, David offers up his decision first, which he calls impossible, as they’re both worthy, and he doesn’t think this is fair. Speaking from his heart, he says he has deep respect for both, and to Jessica, he tells her she’s come a long way and that the camera loves her. He tells Daniel whether he makes it or not, he shouldn’t go back to Iraq, as he’s paid his dues. He has to go with who he thinks has a better chance of sustaining in Vegas, and that means his vote goes to Jessica.

gon_313_10.jpgSharon tells Jessica she is a gorgeous girl with great talent, yet she’s not sure whether she can sustain in Vegas. She’s not sure if Daniel can either, so instead of judging by talent, she has to decide as a mom and puts her vote on Daniel. Piers Morgan is now the deciding vote, and he wonders if that’s everybody’s worst nightmare. He reminds Jessica he was disappointed in her last performance, and reminds Daniel he told him to go back and serve his country. He explains now he meant that in a good way, as he finds no greater cause than to serve your country. He has to go, though, with the one act he feels has the talent to compete in the top ten, and that’s Jessica. She is so wrought with emotion, she drops to the floor, then cries as she leaves. It’ll be interesting to see what Daniel does after this.

Sickstep and Kaitylyn Maher are the first ones up for the second batch of ten acts. It seems like people either overly support this little girl or think she’s gone too far against all these other great talents. She is so undeniably innocent and cute, I’m in the camp that supports her. Jerry is so undeniably excited while announcing it, that I know it has to be Kaitlyn, and it is. Donald Braswell and Tapping Dads step up, and I can’t help but notice that they paired up the dads. Donald is always talking about doing this for his kids, and the dancers are as well. I like both, but really, talent-wise, it’s not contest. Donald moves on.

gon_312_11.jpgThe Taubl Family and Nuttin But Stringz face off, and while they last pairing was the dads, these are the two family acts of last night. The Taubls don’t look happy to face off against the Stringz, as it seems even they know they have no chance, unless they’re both making it through. Sure enough, the Taubls leave, the the Stringz move on, making them the only musical instrument group in the top ten. The same thing happens with Sarah Lenore and Eli Mattson. She knows she’s doomed, yet he holds her hands, and if my lipreading is intact, he te tells her not to worry. Yet, just as assumed, he’s the one moving on.

The judges need to make one more choice, this time between Jonathan Burkin and Joseph Hall, the Elvis impersonator. Piers tells them it’s a very difficult decision, as they’re both different. Jonathan doesn’t make mistakes, and maybe the public feels they’ve seen the best of him. Joseph was brilliant at the start, struggled, then was again brilliant last night. He goes with Joseph, only because he believes there’s more still to come from him. Sharon doesn’t look pleased to be in this position, then votes for Jonathan to go through, then Joseph, then Jonathan, and finally “the baton boy.” She can’t keep names straight, and finally rests her head down on the desk.

gon_308b_01.jpgIt was up to David for the final decision, and he wants both Joseph and Jonathan to remember whether they get voted off tonight or not, they got this far, and  to do that, they’re amazing. Their dreams will continue no matter what the decision is for them personally. He tells Jonathan he loves what he does and applauds him for all the kids that didn’t stuck up for him, but are now watching him tonight. He knows Joseph will have an amazing career as Elvis. Yet, who does he think can sustain in Vegas? Joseph. The baton twirler is going home.

The final ten will perform next Wednesday night, and we’ll then vote to pare the group down to just five acts. Interestingly enough, all acts but one are singers, but those are a very diverse group. We have two legends impersonators, two male opera singers, one R&B singer, one country singer, a 4 year old singer, a modern version of the Cowsills, and a pop singer/piano player. I look for the 4 year old, the modern Cowsills, one of the legends, one of the opera singers, and the country singer to get voted out next week, but that could be extremely premature.
