Big Brother - Writers Taking a Season Off?

cbs_big_brother_1020_content_cian_20080826185031.jpgIs it just me, or does the longer this season of Big Brother goes on, the more it seems the writers are taking a season off? It’s a non-scripted show, so they already have that going for them. All they have to do is write the direction of the show, questions for challenges, etc. Their challenges and so-called “twists” just either seem lame or redone from a past season.

Don’t get me wrong. I love this season. It was sorely needed after the train wreck that last season became. There was only so many naked bodies I could witness on my live feeds. Trust me on this, those of you without the live feeds were definitely spared. We really didn’t get down to any really good strategizing until the past few weeks.

With this cast, though, we had enough to give us some real meat. They were such a strategic set that there was more of that in the first week than there was all last season. The problem is Big Brother didn’t give them the right tools to work with. Had they come up with some really inventive twists and challenges, we’d all be turning off the set Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights in complete awe.

Instead, we’re having a rehash of twists from earlier seasons and strange comps that seem to require no thought at all. It’s almost as if the writers are sitting there after their eight hours with nothing to show for their time, then at the last minute, pulling out something that’s been done before or the first thing off the top of their head, just so they can get home in time to see CSI.

As far as challenges, how long and hard did those writers need to think to come up with searching for two veto symbols in a haystack? The only exciting part of that was who was actually going to win. The comp was … well, stupid. In another comp they stole Gretchen Massey’s idea about pairing up socks. In another, it was an updated rock, paper, scissors with disgusting food. How much thought could have actually gone into creating those?

cbs_big_brother_1020_content_cian_20080826185054.jpgAs far as the twists? We were promised a season that went back to the original with no twists, but instead, they keep coming up with retread mini twists of the past. They aren’t done as full scale as they were done originally, and seem like they’re just thrown in at the last minute to come up with something. We had America’s Player, but only for one week. Granted, that one week was enough to feed Michelle and Ollie’s paranoia, but that was because they were expecting it after last summer. We also had our recordings waking up houseguests which has been done before, America voting on one person to receive a phone call from home, and this week a fast forward show with two evictions. Been there; done that.

Regardless of the completely retreaded show, it was quite exciting, but the excitement level wasn’t raised at all because of the twists. It was because the more popular players were winning. Michelle and her ridiculously paranoid theories were voted out, then Keesha won HoH, insuring that Ollie would be voted out unless he won the veto. When he struggled to find a veto symbol in the haystack when most of the others had already found one, we knew it was all over for him.

cbs_big_brother_1020_content_cian_20080826185049.jpgThe only thing that we didn’t get to see was who won the next HoH, as we still have to have another one crowned so that he or she can send someone else home next Thursday. I won’t spoil it for those of you that want to be surprised on Sunday night, but I’ll also tell you to go nowhere else on the internet, as I’m practically the only person out there that isn’t spoiling it.

In all seriousness, okay, I just can’t be 100% serious when discussing Big Brother. There’s a little jokester in here somewhere, but I do hope they get someone to talk with Michelle and Ollie before they head to the jury house, as they were definitely starting to lose it. Michelle lost it a few weeks back, and this just cemented it for her. I’m guessing she is choosing not to believe Julie Chen that Dan is not a plant. Her paranoia is too far gone. And Ollie really needs to get that anger in check. If Dan ends up joining him in sequester, I’m hoping they remove the plastic knives again, as I’m beginning to think Ollie’s plan was to kill everyone, then pray over their bodies when he was done.
