So You Think You Can Dance - Taking It to the Streets

Published by laurabelle at 11:40 am under Commentary, Reviews Edit This

450x337_u1h0307.jpgWith all final 20 dancers back again and being introduced by their original couples, poor Will Wingfield is all alone. Jessica King must not be well enough yet to dance. That and Courtney Galiano and Twitch being in the final four together left their original partners Kherington Payne and Gev Manoukian to be paired with each other. It made it kind of funny when tall Kherington picked up tiny Gev! I’ve been waiting too long for these results as it was, and then a football game pushed it back even further. So let’s get on with this.

Our judges tonight are Mia Michaels, Debbie Allen, Alan Shankman, Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, and Lil’ C. The top 20 took the stage together one last time in a group dance choreographed by Shane Sparks to Boom by Sin feat. T-Pain; it’s typical Sparks. Watching these people dancing up there it reminds me how difficult it was to decide who should leave this week. There is just a mess of talent on that stage.

We’ll get to see the judges’ favorite dances tonight, and Nigel’s first pick is Bollywood with Katee Shean and Joshua Allen. You can tell it’s finale night. They’re more smiley than usual. I thought it was really great they did this dance, but it was far from a favorite of mine. However I can’t seem to take my eyes off it. Mary Murphy talks about favorite partnerships, especially Courtney and Gev. She wants to see them doing the rumba again, as it was passionate, sexy, and the pefect blend of innocent and maturity. It’s passionate and sexy, I’ll give it that!

450x337_courtneyg-gev-rumba.jpgTwo of the best poppers from the auditions, Robert Moraine and Philip Chbeeb, are going to have a pop-off. Philip came down with pneumonia and was advised to not go to Vegas, and Robert quit on the first day in Vegas. He came back a few weeks ago and accepted the challenge for a pop-off. This oughta be good. They dance tonight to Stronger by Kanye West, a most perfect popping song if I ever heard one. If I thought I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen during Bollywood, this is just mesmerizing. I pity whoever it is that has to judge this. Robert is more amazing, but Philip seems to have more musicality.

Mia tells them they are both out of this world completely. She votes for Philip, though. Adam tells Philip he’s unbelievable, but Robert is a freak of nature, so he’s freaking for him. He scared the living boop out of him. Debbie thoguht Philip was more musical, but Robert was more theatrical, and in a battle theatrics win. Nigel liked the way Robert even had time to make fun of Philip’s moves. Mary calls it not even fair, but says she has to give it to Robert and gives one of her screams. Lil’ C says it was buck. He’s going to have to go with Robert, though, because while Philip was so funky and groovy, Robert’s musicality serves. Robert gives his respect to Philip and is honored to be part of the first televised popping battle.

Adam talks about his faovrite routine, but gets off track talking about his Step 2 and Step 3 movies. This routine he’s choosing was special, because it brought Comfort back. He’s choosing Forever, choreographed by Dave Scoot, with Twitch and Comfort. It’s a lot of fun, for sure. I maybe be one of the few, but I do miss her. Lil’ C compares the show to an emaculate museum, and one ofhis favorites pieces of art showcases the relationship between mind, heart, and dance floor. He’s choosing Bleeding Love by Mark Kanemura and Chelsie Hightower, saying a lof people don’t understand you need to dance through your heart. As much as I miss Comfort, I really miss Mark, even though he’s only been gone for one week.

450x337_chelsieh-markk-hip-hop.jpgMary is missing from her chair, and Nigel says he has no idea where she’s gone, but it’s the quietest she’s been all season. She appears onstage dancing. We finally get to see some of Mary’s moves. She’s dancing with Dmitry from season two, doing a cute Latin number that may not have had Chelsie’s hips, but has much more flavor. And she’s got a set of legs on her that we never get to see hidden behind the judges’ desk.

Mia chooses her favorite dance of the year, and she explains this season has been the best choreographically of all. Two of her favorite choreographers have been Desmond Richardson and Dwight Rhoden, so she chooses the ballet they did with Will and Katee. You know what I”m going to say, don’t know? I’ve missed Will. These two togegther are … amazing on this. These are some great favorites chosen tonight. Will says after it’s the best feeling in the world having Debbie Allen here.

Adam gets to pick another routine and says he would not want to follow that, as when they nailed that turn, he literally got on his feet and started screaming. He’s picking the Garden by one of the newer choreographers, Sonya Tayeh. He feels she has video cameras on him, as it’s like the last eight years of his dating life, but regardless of that, it shook up the show. He loved how Courtney and Mark came alive as actors. I still miss Mark.

450x337_sytycd_2008_07_30-show-425_04.jpgThe top four comes to the middle of the stage to hear the first name to not be the winner, if that makes sense. Courtney is the first one out. She gets hugs and kisses from everyone, and I loved her, but I’m not surprised. She encourages us to see she is not sad at all and knows she was fortunate to look and see her family in the audience every week. She gets flowers from … someone … and I think they’re bigger than she is. She recalls the quote “Youth is wasted on the young,” and says it’s not wasted on her. She knew people wouldn’t think she’d get this far, but she’s proud of herself. So are we, Courtney!

The top 5 guys reprise their Five Gives Named Moe routine that Nigel choreographed. It just makes you want to jump out on the stage and join them. They’re followd by the cast of Criss Angel Believe, being choreoraphed by Wade Robson. It’s … weird. A thing with bunnies that look demonic or something. I can’t go there. I hope there aren’t children watching. They might have Easter nightmares after this, as I love Criss Angel, but this stuff on stage is nothing I want to believe in.

450x337_sytycd_u1h4208_show_421422.jpgThe final three come out onstage, Joshua, Katee, and Twitch. One more will be eliminated. The next being eliminated is Katee. Joshua seems more shocked than anyone else. As for what she’ll remember most, she says this has changed her life and she cannot be more grateful. Everyone here has changed her life and she thanks them all for pushing her and making her grow. Cat tells her they have a surprise for her, as there’s a prize for the top boy and top girl this year, so she’s going away with $50,000, and flowers that are nearly as big as she is.

Debbie Allen invites her Dance Academy filled with young people onto the stage to dance for us, and then we get a special treat as Nigel joins them onsteage. We’ve always said we wanted to see clips of him dancing, and here we are with him doing a tap routine. He’s really good. Of course, he’s being compared here to yong people, but with talent out of young kids these days, that’s not necessarily indicitative of talent level. I gotta hand it to the old guy. He did good! But after, Adam challenges to take him on next season, and Debbie thinks every judge should get onstage next year.

Mary intros another favorite routine, saying it’s about relationships again, and while we’ve all had interesting realtionships, none as interesting as Mia. Twitch and Katee bring back their door routine. I’m figuring with him still in ithe competition, and her out now, it could lead to some interesting extra tension here.

450x337_sytycd_u1h7037_show_423424.jpgThe Jonas Brothers are their musical guest tonight, but with my the show on so late tonight because of the football game, my daughter is no longer awake to watch them. I suppose that’s what TiVo was made for.

Debbie talks about all the hot man/woman action on the show, and it was Twitch yet again, along with Kherington. He rose to the elegance of a man, and in the words of Lil’ C it was like “the dedciation of the dramatization of the creation of the he mutiliation of the soul buck buck buck. ” This causes Adam to tell Lil’ C to put down the dictionary. Back to the dance, it’s just beautiful and flowing, and I think it’s the dance that was inspired by Jean Marc Genereux’s daughter.

Nigel chooses the last routine of the evening, and points to one by Tabitha and Napoleon. He picks up some notes and tries to read something that has a ton of words, then gives it back to LIl’ C and tells him to keep writing for the presidential campaign. This routine is one by Katee and Joshua that they had done on their first week on the show and one that she chose as her favorite dance as well.

As a special treat, we catch up a little waith some past dancers from the show, and they come out and entertain us a little. We have names up there like Benji, Sara, Lacey, Dmitry, Hok, Dominic, Travis, etc. This year’s dancers join them onsteage as well. Kind of like Homcoming.

top20_joshua-allen.jpgFinally, it’s time for the big result. It’s coming down to Joshua and Twitch. In all these seasons a street dancer has never won the show, and now it’s coing down to two of them. After 60 million votes, the winner is Joshua, who once again is crying. Twitch gets some flowers that aren’t as big as he is, and Joshua is left alone on the stage with Cat. He wants people out there to never let anone tell you you can’t do something, because God is in control and with Him, you can do anythng.

I don’t think this show could have ended on a better note. It almost seemed like one of those “everyone’s a winner” nights. In addition, Cat announced that for the tour, it will indeed be the top 11, meaning a recovered Jessica will join in along with Comfort. I think that’s only fair, however I wonder what will happen to group dances with 6 women and 5 men?
