America’s Got Talent - And Piers Is Losing His

Published by laurabelle at 11:50 pm under Commentary Edit This

agtlogosmall.jpgI’m not sure what’s going on, but I think Piers is going soft on us. Maybe he’s just as eager as I am to get this competition started for America’s Got Talent. I can’t even remember when the auditions started, that’s how long it was. I was hoping tonight was the last night of auditions, but getting towards the end I found the last week of auditions is next week. So on we go for yet another hour of this.

The guy that I just couldn’t believe Piers Morgan was in favor of going on was Ronny B, whose talent is just too hard to describe. He sang, and danced, and did weird moves like he was going to strip, but didn’t. He didn’t do any of these things well at all and seemed to hit an absolute low when he ran back and tried to climb into the American Flag scenery. David Hasselhoff was quick to X him, but the other two judges waited it out. In the end, David of course said no to him, and it wasn’t all that unusal to hear Sharon Osbourne defending him someone that seems to have lesser talent, but when Piers said he liked it and voted the guy through, I was shocked.

I could see the praise for XL, a warehouse assistant. All three judges like him, and once again Piers had the best praise, telling him he actually preferred his verson of Ordinary People to John Legend’s. He was a family guy, bringing his wife and young son with him to the auditions, and he was just one of those guys you root for before you even see his act. He didn’t knock it completely out of the park, as he had some weird phrasing, but he certainly did well enough to move on and he did.

0000039897_20070521114912.jpgAnother performer getting high praise from Piers was Michael Harrison, a ventriloquist. Piers admitted that he was ready to not like him, as he knew he’d end up omparing him to last year’s winner, Terry Fator. Yet this ventriloquist did something different that we hadn’t seen before. He used a unique dummy, a guy from the audience, and made him say chicken over and over in a clever little bit. Let’s just hope now that that’s not his only good bit.

In a bit of confusion, the judges agreed that Texas State Strutters were comparable to the Rockettes and saying they just didn’t see how this could transfer to the Las Vegas stage with people willing to spend a good hunk of money to see at least an hour of them. Sharon voted no, while Piers, who had questioned if they could sustain voted yes. The same went for the father/son duo, The Snake Kissers. The father would kiss the head of a cobra. It was an interesting novelty act, but what do you do after that? How do you sustain that act for an hour? All three judges agreed and sent them home, even Piers.

I’m not sure Fun With Hand Shadows will be able to sustain an hour either, although it was an entertaining bit for what we saw. While one guy announced, the other made shadow puppet hands of presidents and other famous world leaders. A bunny wasn’t enough for him as he did Presidents Clinton, Nixon, and Kennedy, and the Pope. Nevertheless, they were moved on. I can’t see them making it much further than this as it is limiting talent, but it was a lot of fun for the little we saw.

The show always seems to save the emotional favorite for the very last. Queen Emily explained in her taped bit that she’s had some really tough times. As her grown children waited in the wings along with Jerry Springer, Queen Emily launched into a verson of Chain of Fools that was just amazing. I always like it at this point when the response they receive from the audience and judges hits them, as they find out they have arrived. They seem to get the validation they have been waiting for all their lives. All the judges only wanted to know how she got to be 40 with that voice, not being discovered.

We have yet another week of auditions, meaning we haven’t seen some of the best talent yet. I just want it to get going, as there’s some I can’t wait to see again like the younger kids that made it through, the opera singer, the guy with the severed vocal chored, etc. And those are just the singers. There were a whole lot of others that are waiting for us to see them again as well. I just hope sitting through next week won’t be that unfun if Piers conitnues to act bored, putting through some acts that are questionable at best.
