Big Brother 10 - Explaining Jessie

Published by laurabelle at 11:37 pm under Commentary Edit This

bb1004_0028.jpgWhile first looking at this tenth season of Big Brother, Jessie Godderz seemed like an easy out. Even Allison Grodner, executive producer of the show, explained he was extremely wide-eyed about experience and that he didn’t seem to know what he was getting into. I picked either him or Dan to go first, and sure enough Jessie was nominated the first week, only to come off the block, and win HoH the first week, putting Dan on the block. Apparently, I wasn’t too far off, yet I’m struggling to get a handle on the big guy.

Reading his bio, Jessie definitely comes off as shallow. He seems all about him and his body. He’s the youngest pro body builder and his goals are to help others achieve healthy, fit lifestyles. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it just seems like let me help you be as good and look as good as me. His favorite thing to do is to meet up with people whose lives he’s changed. “Yea, Me!’ Sounds like London on The Suite Life of Zach and Cody. Because of Allison Grodner’s comments and how he was coming off here, I just wasn’t giving him any credit or chance at all.

bb1003_076.jpgThe first night of the show, seeing him freak out and overreact to Renny being loud and obnoxious on their first night in the house, certainly didn’t help any of the feelings going about Jessie. I didn’t really see a whole lot the first week on the live feeds to change that feeling either, including him getting on Renny for waiting an hour and a half to apologize, even though she had done it that night in private, but there were a few glimmers of hope, where I thought maybe there was a little more to this guy than just muscle and brawn.

Once Jessie won the second HoH competition, I began to change my preconceived ideas a little. This wasn’t a comp won with muscle or athleticism, this was a comp won with math knowledge (or possibly luck) along with having to know his fellow houseguests really well. He answered questions and didn’t get any wrong (along with three others) based on how all the other houseguests would answer. The tiebreaker was the math question, and while that very well could have ben a lucky guess, getting all those answers right knowing his houseguests wasn’t luck. He’s obviously paying attention to people other than himself.

bb1004_0181.jpgWhen it came time to figure out his nominations, he resisted the temptation to put up his major annoyance of Renny and put up the people his alliance were targeting, Steven and Dan. The whole house was irritated by Steven at that point, so that was a move for the house, and Dan had been tight with Brian and the only one to vote to keep him in the house. Listening to him reason out these choices and talk with Angie, in his alliance, but on the way out, it was obvious the guy had some more game in him.

Watching tonight’s episode, though, and listening to the other houseguests’ comments that of all the pictures in his HoH room, most of them are of him posing, and not about his family that he should be missing, it put me back on the fence with Jessie. I did a little research online and I found two videos of him on MTV, doing dating type shows. Trust me, that did nothing to help his image.

bb1004_0150.jpgIn one, Jessie’s answering questions along with another guy, competing to win a date with a girl. He thought he should win, based on his physique. In the other video, he’s on a show called Next, competing for a girl by eating hot dogs. He loses, but wins time with the girl anyway. He answers her questions, saying he’s been in love three times, but when she asks how many women he’s been with, with a heavy implication on how many he’s slept with, he answers 10 with a question mark more than anything else. He ups it to fifteen, and finally comes clean and says about 30. He was 20 years old at the time. She rightfully dumps him.

I’m the eternal optimist, so I’m continuing to hold out a shred of hope for Jessie. But that’s it, just a shred. He’s shown that he does know people and has some intelligence, and he’s not just a physique, but it’s as if he doesn’t trust that side of himself, or doesn’t want to own up to that side. If he keeps following his alliance instead of making decisions for himself, he’ll go a little further, but not much. Yet, if he starts thinking for himself, and using the brain that he’s exhibited he does have, I think he could go pretty far.
