The 2 Coreys - Working It Out, Or at Least, Trying To
Even twenty years later, we’re still enamored with them, and curious enough to tune in. The 2 Coreys, Corey Feldman and Corey Haim, were quite the anomaly back then, and while separately they were good young actors, together, they presented something that was exciting. Twenty years and way too many troubles later, with neither at a place in their career similar to their teens, they’re attempting a comeback … together.
Feldman and Haim both reached their peak of stardom in their teens. Feldman had been in acting since he was three, but Haim was late to the party, with his mom signing him up for acting lessons to overcome his shyness. Yet, he was receiving raves for his appearances. No one ever knew which Corey you were talking about, and they soon became synonymous with each other. They started appearing in films together, in the process, creating a tight bond. They started off with Lost Boys, and moved on to License to Drive and Dream a Little Dream.
It started out as grumbling, and soon got too loud to ignore. These boys were great talents, but had worked themselves up quite a drug habit. While it was Haim that was in the news for his drug use more often, Feldman was known to abuse it himself. They continued in some joint ventures here and there, but it would never amount up to the success they once had together.
Feldman came back in the public eye first. While he never really left, he certainly wasn’t appearing in movies or TV where we’d find him easily. He became part of the cast of Surreal Life, and his behavior was a little odd at time, and wasn’t necessarily promising to the point where producers would see him and say, hey, now there’s a guy I want to hire for my film. He also got married while on the show, and he received quite some flak with people calling it a publicity stunt. While he may have had the best of intentions, he can’t argue (yet does anyway), that as a guy that wasn’t at the top of his game, it certainly did look like he was after some publicity.
Haim was back, or trying to be back apparently, but we didn’t know about it. The two guys had apparently had a falling out at some point, yet signed on together for the reality show, The 2 Coreys. The first season was a light-hearted venture with the the two guys, along with Feldman’s wife that he gained from his Surreal Life stint. It turns out it wasn’t a typical reality show, as they would plan out what would happen on the show the night before, yet it still worked without a script to keep its billing as “unscripted,” as Feldman explained in an interview with Meg at realityshack.com.
Late in their season a fake fight was staged, and somehow this led them into some dangerous territory. While it seemed the show would now be dead in the water, it has indeed returned for a second season, which Feldman explained would be much darker, as they get down to the real problems in their relationship with much more honesty.
Watching the first episode of this second season, you can see the real animosity in between the two, and you can also understand why both feel the way they do. Feldman, more successful in these twenty years than Haim, feels that Haim has a jealousy issue with him. He also was vehement that Haim had called the National Enquirer and given them his side of their rift, although Haim claimed he would have never done such a thing.
The two guys sat down to have it out with each other, and on the second episode airing just last night, they finally got down to the nitty gritty of it all. Haim was still denying calling the Enquirer and claiming he has no jealousy issues. What he claims he is upset about is absolutely shocking. He stated that he was raped by a male friend of Feldman’s when he was 14, and Feldman did nothing about it, not supporting him and continued to be friends with the guy.
Feldman shot back at him that he was also raped around the same time, by yet a different male acquaintance, so Haim had no right to be p.o.’ed about it. This brings us back to the Michael Jackson trial when Feldman was talking openly about his friendship with Jackson. He claimed Jackson never tried anything with him, but did admit he was showing him some provocative material, and he thought it was weird. The guy that he said did rape him was working as his assistant, and Feldman says he was so young, he didn’t know what to do about it. He had been a virgin until then.
So here’s what I was wondering last night watching the show. Is Michael Jackson the guy that raped Haim? It could have been. Haim stated it was a friend of Feldman’s, and he continued to be friends with him after the incident. Feldman stated it was his assistant, not Jackson that raped him.
Regardless, this hotbed issue is going to keep me tuning in. I think it’ll all eventually come out. Haim later admitted to Feldman that he did indeed call the Enquirer, which seemed to appease Feldman for the time-being. Then, since they want to work through their troubles and get back to being best friends, they started seeing a relationship counselor. That sounds like something that was suggested by the TV show, but either way, I don’t think they’re making up things to talk about anymore. I think their relationship is so contentious, that there are many layers to it that will unfold throughout this second season. Hopefully, they’ll both finally find some peace, as it sounds like they have both had too many troubles.
