So You Think You Can Dance - Salsa Not Spicy Enough
As I expected, even with the great field of dancers that we have on So You Think You Can Dance, things are getting clearer on who the favorites are and who is just going to keep on appearing in the bottom three, but who it is falling in the bottom three is a little surprising, although I don’t necessarily disagree.
The first couple to land in the bottom three tonight is Chelsea Traille and Thayne Jasperson. Mia somewhat rudely tells them that she isn’t shocked they’re there, and she’s sure they aren’t shocked either. I agree, but the way she went about this is odd, just like many of her critiques last night. She said then that he was a little dumpy. Mary and Nigel weren’t any more impressed, but at least they didn’t tell him he was dumpy.
The next couple landing in the bottom three was definitely not a surprise. Mary talked to them about how much better they did last week as compared to this week, and they did, but the confusing thing was that this time it was Susie Garcia’s genre. Truthfully, I was surprised she made it to final twenty to begin with. Marquis Cunningham can’t really be blamed, as he was complaining about not being able to understand the dancing assistant that was teaching them.
Nigel talked to the final bottom three couple, Comfort and Chris Jarosz, saying they’ve really had a go of it so far, with her suffering a shoulder injury in rehearsals for last week’s show, and this week getting krumping, something that definitely wasn’t his style. What Nigel didn’t mention, but was another thing going against Comfort and Chris, is that they had the unfortunate luck of following up Twitchington’s beautiful Viennese Waltz that the choreographer created for his daughter with Rett’s Syndrome. You be the judge on how hard it was not to feel let down by them after the beauty of the first routine.
As they bottom six dancers danced for their lives in solo performances, it really didn’t clear much up for us. Chelsea and Comfort were better than average, and that’s the most you could say. Susie was much better than she was with her own style the night before, but that really wasn’t saying much. Judging on the fact she did so badly with her own style, she seemed like the odd girl out. As far as the guys, usually you get all different styles here, but the guys landing in the bottom were all contemporary dancers. What’s that saying? Marquis looked very impressive, and it looked to be a contest between Thayne and Chris, and with Nigel on Chris’ case all the time about having the personality of a tree, well, it seemed pretty set in stone. When the judges came back to announce their decisions over who would be leaving, Nigel gave a lecture to the bottom six, talking about their careers not being over yet. His point of reference was watching Kobe Bryant lose in the NBA finals, then going over to congratulate each of the Boston Celtics. He thought it showed that just because you fail doesn’t mean you aren’t still a brilliant player. Likewise, you can leave tonight, but it doesn’t mean you aren’t a brilliant dancer. He didn’t connect it back to this, but earlier in the show they had a flamenco dancer on that auditioned for season one and season two. He made it to Las Vegas both times, but never the final 20. They didn’t say how successful he is now, but they left us with the thought that he probably was.
As expected, Nigel cut Susie, judging on her cooling down since the auditions and not being able to get back what she once had. However, he noted Comfort had a similar situation, not being able to get back to her old brilliance. He seemed to be giving her the benefit of the doubt because of her shoulder injury. When Susie was eventually given the heave ho, some interesting things were surely said, but we missed out on them because Fox kept going back and forth into commercials and a map of where mortgage fraud is found in the U.S.
For the guys, it didn’t go as expected. Marquis was cut, with the reasoning that most of what they saw in his routine tonight seemed to be tricks and not dancing. Does excitement not count for anything here? He may have been resorting to tricks, but he was much more exciting than Thayne and Chris, tree personality or no. It just seemed like Nigel was searching for a reason to get rid of Marquis, as he didn’t want to pair him up with a different girl. Had he gotten rid of Chris, he would have had to pair up Comfort with Marquis, and that just doesn’t seem like a good match. He doesn’t seem like a good match for Chelsea either. So rather than pull the two girls down further, they cut their losses and got rid of Marquis.
Regardless, I just don’t see Thayne or Chris making it much further, which is odd. The contemporary guys usually do very well, but instead this year we seem to have a better showing out of the B boys and poppers, oddly enough. Then again, most of them don’t have have straight street experience, and it seems to be making them better all around dancers. Aside from that, they all seem to have much more personality than the contemporary guys, and in the long run, that’s what’s going to make the difference, and what’s going to keep them around much longer.
