There’s new drama out there for Patrick Swayze, but thankfully, it has nothing to do with his recent diagnosis. He’s been signed on by A&E to star in a new FBI drama that will start filming this summer.

Three months ago, Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, one of the more rapidly spreading forms of the disease. While rumors swirled all around in various forms, with the worst of which stating he only had five months to live, the simple truth to the matter is that the doctors caught the cancer fairly quickly, and believe it to now be under control. Swayze’s doctors cleared him to work again, leading to the new drama.

Swayze was allowed to sign on the dotted line to star in the new A&E police drama, The Beast. He’ll star as a veteran FBI agent that gets assigned a new partner. What he doesn’t know is that this new partner is acting as double agent, being asked to keep an on Swaze’s character. We’ll see The Beast hit the air in 2009.

The most disturbing thing of all of this news, and this sounds horrible to say, but of all of this, the most disturbing thing is Swayze’s age as noted. All these press releases and news articles state that he’s 55 years old. 55? How did he get to be 55? While he’s had many film roles, we’ll always think of him as the dancer from Dirty Dancing. Sure, he may have overacted his way through much of the film, but something about it all made it very iconic and sexy, and he’s now 55?

Sure, in the twenty plus years since Dirty Dancing I’ve somehow turned 44, but in some ways, I guess I imagined that time was standing still around me. The truth is, of course, that it hasn’t, and along with Swayze’s advancing age, he now has a greater chance of illness, just like the rest of us. Yet, also like the rest of us, he also has his ups and downs, and with this recent news, it’s good to know he’s having another up.
