Sex and the City, Again and Again

sex-and-the-city-poster-c12158661.jpegSomehow I missed the original Sex and the City craze. It’s one of those things that didn’t start out intentional, but somehow ended that way. I get like that with a lot of things that I originally miss out on, then I suddenly become indignant about never having seen it. It was like that with both E.T. and Flashdance. The movies were out for twenty years before I got around to seeing them. Originally I was just missing out on seeing them for no certain reason, but the more good things I heard about them, the more I oddly thought I just didn’t need those things in my life until I stopped hearing about them.

I didn’t intend originally to skip out on seeing Sex and the City. We just didn’t have HBO. I knew I’d like it, as I’m a chick flick/romantic comedy type of gal. Aside from that, I’ve noticed that I tend to gravitate towards seeing TV shows and movies about writers, even before I became one myself. Yet, even after we eventually got HBO, I still wouldn’t turn it on, feeling somehow that if I had made it this far without the sex lives of these four women in my life, then it must not be something I needed. Even after the show appeared all over on cable, on different stations and at different times, every day, I still stayed away form this show, as if it was intentional.

sexandthecity.jpgSex and the City stopped creating original episodes, yet it was still on all the time. Once I heard they would be coming out with a Sex and the City film, to say I was nonplussed is an understatement. I certainly had no intention of seeing it, yet once I was signing up for movie assignments as another writing gig of mine, there were slim pickins’ for this past weekend. I begrudinging put my name next to the Sex and the City movie.

After all, it’s not like I didn’t know anything about Sex and the City. It was so big, it was pretty much hard to ignore. I knew the basics about these four women. In addition, I took in an episode I found on cable one night in preparation for all this. I also did the most logical thing, especially considering this show is about four women supporting each other. I brought two women with me to the theatre, my sister and my niece, both huge fans of the show that also started watching it late, by seeing it on cable, then buying all the DVD sets.

What I, of course, found watching the Sex and the City film was that not only did I not have a reason to avoid this for so long, I absolutely loved it. Despite not having had the long history with the show, I had began caring about the characters immediately, crying and laughing my way through the whole film.

sexandcity2.jpgAs soon as I got home I set up the TiVo with a season pass for Sex and the City on every channel in which it was available, sometimes getting three episodes a night. I’ll watch this nonstop until I get caught up with all the seasons of the show and have seen every episode. I did the same thing with Third Watch and Everybody Loves Raymond once I fell in love with those shows late in the game also.

This is how I’ll spend my summer. After all, Ellen is now in reruns, so I won’t have her to watch faithfully every day. Sex and the City will become my summer obsession, my guilty pleasure, that I’ll watch again and again, never getting sick of it, despite the fact that not too long ago, I was going as far to avoid it. It’s what I do.
