American Idol - One Week Later
One week ago we watched David Cook be crowned the winner of American Idol season seven, well, some of us did. For those that were relying on their TiVo, they saw “American Idol 2008 is … David …” and it ran out. Luckily, I add seven extra minutes onto every American Idol episode recorded in sort of a been there/done that sort of thing, so I didn’t cut out until halfway through his coronation song.
So just what has happened in the past week? Has anything changed for the winner or non-winners? David Cook, of course, has been appearing all over the place as the newly crowned American Idol. He has appeared with the other Idols and alone. He seems to be the most gracious guy and seems very sincere when he says he just wants to put out a record he can be proud of, even five years in the future.
Cook told Ellen DeGeneres that while he originally only attended the auditions to support his little brother, and made it on and won while his brother didn’t even make it to Hollywood, they were playing Madden shortly after he made the final 24, and his brother won, very excited. David figured one won Madden, and the other American Idol. They’re even now, no?
Runner-up David Archuleta is fielding lots of questions about the same things, if he plans to still pursue college and what the hell is up with his dad. As for college, he plans to pursue music, but isn’t ruling out college, currently thinking of becoming an ears, nose, throat doc. The interviewers asking about his dad aren’t asking the right way. They’re leaving him too much space, allowing him to weasel out. Instead of saying, “Why are some people saying your father is difficult,” they should be saying, “Why did you father give you the go ahead to change the lyrics of your song, against the wishes of American Idol, costing them a lot of money? Has he offered to pay them back?”
The two Davids appeared twice on Larry King Live, along with the rest of the final ten. Well, almost the rest of them. Michael Johns wasn’t in the studio, but he was in Las Vegas, for reasons unknown to us, as he refused to take any questions seriously. He was a lot of fun, and discussing this with other fans of the show, we’re thinking had we seen more of this from him during American Idol, that he wouldn’t have been eliminated so soon. Jason was asked if he would consider selling his dreadlocks for charity and he seemed to be considering it.
CNN is apparently taking lessons from Fox on how to time a show, as King’s show went over the hour, as he was asking the Idols if there were an American Idol yearbook, who would get the different awards. Michael Johns would have not surprisingly received Class Clown, but also would have won Class Flirt. Kimberly Caldwell might disagree with this one after being asked out on the air by Cook. They recently had dinner together, and from the way he’s been talking in his interviews, I think he’d like to continue to see her. I never did get to hear who would have won cutest couple, as my TiVo ran out. At least they didn’t reply David … and then get cut off again.
There is also one last Idol in the news this week. Well, not even an Idol, but an almost Idol. Josiah Leming. He was the young guy living out of his car at the time he auditioned. He definitely captured our attention , both with his story and his original music. Somehow in the Hollywood rounds, he had a little setback, and Simon accused him of being over-confident. He didn’t make the final 24, and we were all shocked, hoping he’d be picked up by someone, even just to get off the streets.
It turns out Josiah signed a record deal already, meaning he’s beat out all the final 12. The bad thing is he’s now trashing the show a little, calling it glorified karaoke. I think he’s kidding himself if he thinks he’d have that record deal today without “glorified karaoke.” It seems Simon is probably right again, as Josiah still seems a little over-confident.
Even one of the bigger names from last season doesn’t seem to have a record deal yet. Sanjaya Malakar is filming an insurance ad in India, according to TMZ. The funny thing is the ad talks about planning for your retirement, as it seems he must be, if we haven’t heard any more of him in the past year, other than an appearance here and there in the audience of the glorified karaoke show this season.
So far no word on Idols from this season that will get record deals, but David Archuleta let it slip a little to Larry King that he was in talks with Jive Records. If the record companies are smart, they’ll wait until he turns 18, so that they don’t have to deal with that dad of his.
