The Bachelorette - Deanna’s Changing the Rules!
Anybody that watched The Bachelor the season before last will tell you that Deanna Pappas got the shaft by Brad Womack. In an unprecedented move, he didn’t pick anyone! He couldn’t even find a way to give someone a promise ring or even a call. Worse yet, he started to tell Deanna, so it seemed, that he was going to choose her, then tugged at his collar, paced around, then gave her her walking papers. She was led to believe he changed his mind on a reunion of sorts that aired the following week on ABC, but instead, he turned her down yet again.
Ellen DeGeneres, a fan of the show the same as the rest of us, invited Deanna on her talk show and suggested she should be the next Bachelorette. ABC agreed. After watching another season of Bachelor in the meantime, and feeling unfulfilled yet again as Brit Matt Grant chose Shayne Lamas, seen days later as the cover girl of Girls Gone Wild magazine, and surprised that everyone, including her father, thought she was was only in this to further her acting career.
At this point, we’re ready for a good romance, and honestly, ABC trotting out Trista and Ryan Sutter to carry on that torch is getting a little old, and we know we can’t count on Byron and Mary after their recent problems. Reality show fans were even discussing lately that there have been more successful relationships to be borne out of CBS’ Survivor than on The Bachelor.
We would have accepted just about anything for this summer season of the dating show, but ABC threw a few huge changes at us just to keep things interesting. The biggest change is that instead of the bachelors living in one comfortable mansion, and the bachelorette living alone in an even more comfortable mansion, she’ll be in the mansion with the first three guys to receive a rose the previous week, and the rest of the guys will be sharing very understated digs, having to shower outside. This leaves me with two questions, the first being is this just an excuse for us to see these guys’ butts? The second, how weird does it sound for the guys to be “hoping to get a rose?
However, the disturbing part in all this is that it hasn’t had all that much impact yet. Sure, the guys that weren’t living with Deanna were extra pissy about it, but we really didn’t get to see any of the close living situations. They kept talking about how it would be great, as they’d get to see how each other really is, especially when they wake up in the morning, but that’s all it amounted to, just talk. We never saw any of it. Perhaps that will change as the season moves on. We need to see some confrontations of some sort with it, something along the lines of last season’s “Walk off” confrontation from Marshana.
There’s only one other annoyance so far, as that’s that Deanna must have a preference for brunettes, as that’s all we’re left with in the final 12, and at this point, it’s still a little difficult to keep them separate, and I thought keeping some of the blonde bachelorettes apart was hard. There are certainly some frontrunners at this point and no mater how many times we go through with this, there are never many surprises in the end over who is picked. It’s always someone that bonded early on with the bachelor/bachelorette. At this point, it sure looks like Jason, Jeremy, or Graham will be standing in the end.
It seemed like last week if you talked to anyone, they were rooting on Jason, the single dad, but things didn’t seem to progress that way this week. I still thing he’ll stay around until the end if not end up winning the whole thing, though. At least it looks like he finally tells her next week that he’s a dad, and that’s good. I don’t know why he’s holding back from telling her, as I think it can only help him.
I suppose all of this, though, just adds up to “the most dramatic rose ceremony” every week. The most dramatic thing this week was Deanna stalking off after saying goodbye to the guys she didn’t pick. It seems it’s just hard on her, and that’s good. It certainly should be difficult for her after being in that position herself a few seasons back. It’s only going to get harder, though, from hereon on out

Graham and Jeremy are my predictions for the final two and I think Jeremy may well win the whole thing. He does seem slightly stalker-ish after last night’s episode, but I’m hoping it was editing and not him. Also, he was a gentleman - and actually stood up when she got up to leave the room. Most of them stayed on their butts! So he gets a bonus point for that. (I wonder if Tommy is trying to draft him into a contact with a baseball team. Way to go!)
But for sheer sexiness…..Graham is the man!
I don’t get the thing with Graham, and couldn’t understand Deanna’s fascination with him, but if you see it as well as her, I’ll just consider myself unaffected by Graham’s obvious charm.
